FAQs High School Project

  • What work is being done?
    • The Media Center is being transformed into a Global Learning Commons that will allow students to use 21st century tools.
    • The Cafeteria is undergoing improvements including new walls.  In addition, the kitchen is undergoing safety improvements.
    • The entrance to the High School will open into a new learning area which will include a college like atmosphere with bistro tables.
    • The school store will be part of the new learning area with a completely new structure and learning space.
    • Asbestos was removed in early July.
  • What work will remain in September through January?
    • Because of the scope of the project, the Global Learning Commons will not open until January.  The media center will be housed temporarily across from its old location.
    • The Cafeteria will open in time for the first day of school.
    • The front entrance will be open but the aesthetic work will continue.
    • The HVAC for the media center, faculty lounge and offices will be installed in December.  Heating for the lounge/work area and the offices will be provided.
    • The faculty lounge and work area will be partially open in September with the remaining area opening later in the semester.
  • What areas will be off limits to students and faculty?
    • The new Global Learning Center
    • The hallway immediately in front of the Global Learning Center
  • Will there be an alternative to the hallway?
    • Yes, there will be a covered walkway to access the cafeteria.  Alternatively, the hallway on the second floor may be used.
  • Will work be done during the day?
    • Work inside the old media center and the hallway will proceed during the day.
    • Noisy work will be done before or after school.
    • Work in other areas will be done after school or on weekends.
  • Will students be exposed to hazardous materials?
    • No.  The asbestos disturbed as part of the project was removed in early July as part of the initial plan.
    • Since almost all demolition is complete, very little dust will be present in the work area.  However, any dust will be contained by the contractor by using walls and other methods.
  • When will all of the work be completed?
    • We are hopeful that our initial goal of January 2019 will be met.  However, there is always the possibility of delays in materials arriving.
  • Where will students be during off periods if the library media center is not available?
    • We have increased study hall requirements to provide a safe and supervised location for students to report during free time.
  • Are the students being communicated with and consulted about renovation updates?
    • We will work with student senate leadership throughout the process to promote student voice and communication.
  • How will students know how to move around the building during renovations?
    • Signage will be posted throughout the building to promote the flow of travel within the school day.
  • Will students have enough time to get to class with detours during construction?
    • We will monitor passing time to assure a safe and efficient travel for the students between classes and at dismissal.
  • In the event of an emergency how will students quickly evacuate the building?
    • Signs will be posted throughout the building.
    • Extra evacuation drills will be conducted early in the year.
